Dab Pipe Parts
Before the development of dab rigs for concentrates, members of the smoking community would attach a nail into a bong meant for flower, resulting in an unpleasant inhale. Luckily, times have changed. A dab rig is similar to a small bong and is made up of a few simple pieces designed just for concentrate. A dab pipe includes a nail, which is like a bowl, except it is often made with quartz to withstand high temperatures. Nails also come in ceramic and titanium. Dab rigs can come with domes, which go over the nail after it's been heated. Concentrates are then inserted through the top of the dome.
The other essential element of a dab pipe is the appropriately named dabber, a metal, glass, or ceramic tool used to apply oil to the nail. Dabber shapes include ballpoint, needlepoint, scoop, spoon, paddle, and others. Also, a carb cap can help regulate airflow, although it is not necessary to use. Dab rigs generally come with smaller chambers and passageways, which result in quick transportation of the vapor to minimize potential stagnation or staleness.
How to Use a Dab Rig
Using a dab rig is a simple four-step step process.
Step one: Heat the nail using a torch, similar to a creme brulee torch, until it is red hot (ideal temperature is 350 to 400-degrees Fahrenheit).
Step two: Allow the nail to cool for 10 to 45 seconds, depending on the material of the nail.
Step three: Apply the concentrate onto the nail using the dabber.
Step four: Apply the carb cap and inhale.
